Nonlinear time series analysis of palaeoclimate proxy records

چکیده

Identifying and characterising dynamical regime shifts, critical transitions or potential tipping points in palaeoclimate time series is relevant for improving the understanding of often highly nonlinear Earth system dynamics. Beyond linear changes properties such as mean, variance, trend, these shifts can manifest signal predictability, regularity, complexity, higher-order stochastic multi-stability. In recent years, several classes methods have been put forward to study data that are based on concepts from dynamics, complex systems science, information theory, analysis. These include approaches phase space-based recurrence plots networks, visibility graphs, order pattern-based entropies, modelling. Here, we review compare detail prominent fields by applying them same set marine proxy records African climate variations during past 5 million years. Applying methods, observe notable dynamics discuss context important events regimes phases intensified Walker circulation, isotope stage M2, onset northern hemisphere glaciation mid-Pleistocene transition. We find studied complement each other allowing us point out distinct aspects series. also detect significant correlations shift indicators with Earth's orbit, suggesting latter triggers palaeoclimate. Diagenetic overprinting of the sphaerosiderite palaeoclimate proxy: are records of pedogenic groundwater dO values preserved?

Meteoric sphaerosiderite lines (MSLs), defined by invariant dO and variable dC values, are obtained from ancient wetland palaeosol sphaerosiderites (millimetre-scale FeCO3 nodules), and are a stable isotope proxy record of terrestrial meteoric isotopic compositions. The palaeoclimatic utility of sphaerosiderite has been well tested; however, diagenetically altered horizons that do not yield sim...

Nonlinear Time Series Analysis

This book represents a modern approach to time series analysis which is based on the theory of dynamical systems. It starts from a sound outline of the underlying theory to arrive at very practical issues, which are illustrated using a large number of empirical data sets taken from various fields. This book will hence be highly useful for scientists and engineers from all disciplines who study ...

Nonlinear Dynamics Time Series Analysis

Much of what is known about physiological systems has been learned using linear system theory. However, many biomedical signals are apparently random or aperiodic in time. Traditionally, the randomness in biological signals has been ascribed to noise or interactions between very large numbers of constituent components. One of the most important mathematical discoveries of the past few decades i...
